It seems that the all-powerful concept is a bit more modern. Ancient Greek gods, for instance, had powers but also flaws. Humans like the products of their imagination (gods) to be human-like. And then they turn this around and say that humans are like the products of their imagination.

Keddaw, for a sec I thought you meant the sound and fire show was too much but you seem to mean it's not enough. I think it's too much given how it's so much more evidence than us mortals are given.

Of course the show was not to prove that YHWH is real (since this the Israelites already believed) or that he's omnipotent (which the god in Samuel doesn't seem to be) but only that he's powerful enough to cause them damage.

keddaw: Oh come on, it's not just a plague or a sound-and-fire show. <a href="http://randomprocessed.blogspot.com/search/label/miracles" rel="nofollow">Miracles </a>happen every day:

It's not fair that the Israelites got a sound-and-fire show to prove the existence and power of their God.

It always surprises me that Christians (especially) always claim omnipotence for their God and all he provides is a plague or a sound-and-fire show. Is a burning bush really proof of omnipotence?

And that's before we get into omniscience, or the new darling omni-benevolence. It really makes me wonder if these religious types have actually read their 'holy' books.
