Dan, it’s interesting that the post and comments have specific points which you do not address but rather say that many non-religious people are not interested in debate.

Also you think that THIS of all posts is designed to escalate animosity and humiliate — really? Where in the post did you get that impression?

Dan: There is no such person as “free thinking” and “Christian” (substitute any religion you like). As long as you subscribe to a particular religion, you constrain your thought process because you are being told to believe in dogmas without any proof.

I have found that many non-religious people who offer such arguments are not actually interested in honest debate. They suggest that we free thinking Christians who counter argue for the Bible are “defensive” or “dogmatic”. Which is a pretty effective but dishonest means of debate. And to add a healthy dose of irony, non-Christians get up in arms and calls fowl on Christians when they flatly say “Without divine salvation, you are going to hell.” My experience tells me the majority of these types of articles are designed for actual discussion or debate, but rather just to escalate animosity and humiliate.

Oh, yes, I mean radical disagreement. As soon as you try to talk about the sensitive points of the Bible, (many [most?]) religious people assume a hostile stance and a kind of denialism; they immediately draw a curtain separating them from the other person and will not move an inch from the dogmatic position they have, no matter what evidence you present to them. I think they find themselves being “tried” by “satan” and will defend their faith because they have learned that this is the correct or noble thing to do.

Takis: I’m not sure that disagreement by itself is an indicator (in genuine fields of enquiry there’s disagreement on all major points). Do you mean major, radical disagreement (as opposed to disagreement on the details within, say, evolutionary biology). In that case I agree

I am learning a lot about the Bible (Torah, Old Testament, whatever you want to call it…) from you

You know, every time I try to point out the bad things about it, I get attacked (by the religious ones) as being too arrogant and only looking at the bad things in the Bible. This bemuses me. If the text is supposed to be god-given, why should it be full of controversial points (to say the least)? Is this a joke or what? And then I get attacked again.
