But I guess the most important answer is that it's not the point -- the point is the nature of the regime and whether it's based on superstition (overtly religious or otherwise) or not. Celebrity "worship" may be vacuous but most of the time it's not a case of a person deciding the majority of their actions by the celebrity's example. I don't think it causes anything like the order of magnitude of harm than following the <em>prescriptive teachings</em> of a set of worship-beliefs. (No idolatry and all that.) The first time I ever walked into a catholic church it really tripped me out. I think my anti-authoritarianism/anarchism may have sprung up from that as well. I would go further and compare <a href="http://randomprocessed.blogspot.com/2008/05/can-you-believe-that.html" rel="nofollow">adoration of a footballer</a>, a film star, or a <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8235660.stm" rel="nofollow">pop singer</a> with religious faith. And I find all of them disgusting. But that's me. Most people don't mind singing the same tune as millions of others often without knowing why. There is no difference between cult of personality and religious faith. I would go further and compare adoration of a footballer, a film star, or a pop singer with religious faith.
